      Ok professor...why couldn't the hat cost 10 dollars and the coat cost 100 dollars? That still makes the cost of the coat 10 dollars more than the hat, right?

      Something tells me I am overthinking it.

        5lbs of gold every time. Actually, 5lbs of gold weighs more than 100lbs of air.

          You are totally wrong. we know the total was 110 bucks. We know the coat was 100 more than the hat so if the hat was 10 bucks that would make the coat 110 bucks for a total of 120. Not 110.

            It is the wording in the question. The coat cost 100$ MORE than the hat, not the coat cost 100$. If the hat was 10$ and the coat was 100$, the coat would only cost 90$ more than the hat

              Because then the Coat is only $90 more than the hat...not $100 like the questions asks

                Oh....ok....now I see....

                So if the coat cost $100 and the hat cost $10 the difference would only be $90, not $100 like you said. I am so wrong. Can I take the test over? My head hurts.

                  For that matter, the hat could cost anywhere from 0 to 10 dollars. As long as the coat cost the difference between the hat and 110 dollars. Am I wrong? If so can someone explain? I mean, the only known is the total and the fact that the coat is $100 more than the hat.

                  Thats alot of people think of it and so did I until the teacher showed me how to set it up way back in the day.

                  So we know that everything has to equal $110.
                  So think of it like this "X + Y = $110"
                  Lets say X is the hat and Y is the coat
                  We also know that Y = X + 100
                  So we know that X + (X+100) = 110 This is how the formula is supposed to look
                  Add like terms
                  2x+100=110
                  2x+-100=-100 Get X on one side by itself
                  2x=10
                  x=5

                  So the cost of the hat is $5 and the cost of the coat is 100 + X = 105$

                    Nope. You're underthinking it, brother.

                    Just kidding!

                    If the coat is $100 and the hat is $10, then the coat costs $90 more than the hat, not $100.

                      It is pretty clear by now that I need to go fishing. As in Colorado fly fishing. That is where my head is at right now.

                        I'll give you a chance to do the test over, but the best grade you can get is an 80 this time.

                          5$ but this is too much thinking. Lets see how many days to bow season and that is the real math we should be worrying about!!
