Used to have a pool and saw them often. Never knew the name, just a water bug to me.

Yep giant water bug! We have thousands of them where I work! We call them acid bugs (acid plant) because they are the only things that can live in our process sumps!!! Tough little buggers!!;

Those things freak me out. Was swimming in the wind mill once and got out to see those all along the bottom.
