I have the same exact issue with an upright deep freezer. Everything thawed out enough for me not to trust eating anything so I lost all of my venison and quail meat. Well I lost what was left anyways.
Luckily mine was very slow in the thawing process and the only things that thawed out were frozen dinners and such, I was able to save everything but am very leery to restock it..

Is the back cover on? Its there to direct airflow across the coils and compressor. if its not running when you get home id second the hard start kit that thegrouse suggested

I caught my chest freezer starting to thaw last Friday before I went out of town and had The Cajun move everything to the inside freezer. Came back today and it is still showing its on- but its dead. Will try a few of these fixes, good info.

I would not restock it. The hot weather will take the compressor out if it is getting hot. Put on a hard start kit first.

Just recently put a hard start on a chest freezer.
              It's freezing good now.
