What rifle would yall suggest for 9yr old boys to start with??

I know this is an archery forum but I am wanting to get a rifle for my 2-9yr old boys to shoot. I have a 223 but it is too big and heavy for them since its an older model. I just wondered what the best one for the money is out there. Thanks for any info. If anyone has anything they want to get rid of I am interested in that also. BTW they both have BOWS!!! Thanks again

.243 you can get a mossberg .243 for 299 with scope or get a nef single shot for 199 at academy all day long.

NEF 223 or 204 would be my guess. idk how big the boys are or anything. but check those out. if you want somethin fancier just get em a ruger no.1 in 223

The Nef or H&R 223 makes a great, affordable starter gun.....and when they outgrow it you can use it for a truck gun.

I grew up shooting a .22-250 and shot my first deer with it at 6 years old.

I started with a Rem. Model 7 in 7mm-08. I still have it to this day, and love it.

I have only had one animal run off from a hit. All other have fallen in their tracks.

They are a little more expensive, but I would say well worth the money.

My son has a Savage 110 in .22-250. I had a trigger job done and cut the stock down a little when he was 9. He's 11 now, and I probably need to put the full-sized stock on. (I bought a 2nd stock when I bought the gun.)

When he was 6, he had a .223 single shot Rossi (like NEF). It was HEAVY, even though it was really small. I wouldn't let him shoot off hand anyway, so it wasn't a problem.

He's killed several deer with both guns. Most dropped in their tracks - one at 185 yards & another at 215. One lung shot deer (his first at age 6) went maybe 60 yards before going down for the count. After I saw that he could shoot well enough, I had him shoot necks. No problems with the .22's there. And no recoil to cause flinching habits either.

                lots of good advice above

most rifle brands now have youth model guns

a Rem M7 youth in .223 would be sweet although they are kinda spendy ($450 +)

the NEF handi-rifle is alot less expensive and you can buy interchangeable barrels down the road

I started both my kids (boy and girl) off with a .223 at around eight years old. In my opinion that was a little weak for deer. We soon moved to a .243 (NEF) and it has been great. Very, very accurate out to 300 yards with a good rest. We did get the "bull" barrell which does add weight but it also helps with the recoil. I also shoot good ammo (Winch????? Supreme). Good luck, we still have that gun and it is a pleasure to shoot and we will always keep it in the family.

Rossi has a combo in 243 and 20 ga I think, at Academy for a good price.

This one is a little non standard, but the 6.5x55 is a great starter. Only slightly more recoil than 243, but so much more effective on deer. Most of the factory loads are light as there are lot of old military arms out there. If you were asking for 6 year old I'd say start smaller, but think a 9 year old can handle. However, i'd rather go smaller than have them develop a flinch, so you'll want to watch this closely.

They both hunt allready. They dove hunt with my 410 and they both can shoot my 20 guage. I have had them both shooting my 223 but its too big for them and heavy. They wont have a problem with flinchin i dont think. I would like a break over single shot bull barrel possibly in 243 or 22-250 i think

                            25cal or bigger...

...if he can shoot a 20ga with light loads then he's ready for a gun he can grow with.
