going on a nm elk hunt in october and trying to figure out what all i need to bring??? I'm going with an outfitter so no need for tents and that stuff.. so far I've decided i need some good boots, good rain gear, and i think I'm gonna go ahead and get some good binoculars too (been wanting some swaros anyways) what else am i gonna need???

Since you are going with an outfitter you probably just need your weapon of choice and backpack. Along with things mentioned. Your outfitter should have a list of what customers need to bring. Are you hunting out of a base camp or horse packing in to a spike camp. If you are going in on horseback, I can tell you to keep your stuff to a minimum. Good optics, your weapon and clothes, a sleeping bag and a daypack is about all you will be able to pack in. I send out lists to my hunters with a recommended size of carry bag. And every year people bring way to much stuff. I tell them they can reduce it or I will do it for them! lol You can only pack in so much gear.

We do DIY every year in CO and I can tell you the 2 most important things are boots and rain gear. I went the cheap route my fist year and regretted it. I also bring an extra pair of boots. Its nice to put on a fresh pair of dry boots in the morning.

          Rain gear
          boots
          GPS
          water
          plenty of cliff bars
          Bow sling

Something for blisters...... Buddy of mine bought high quality boots and had many miles on them when we went elk hunting last year.... second day he had huge blisters on his heals. Walking up and down hills id different than walking the flat north Texas land.....
Good range finder would be good to have, along with a good day pack.

Did a lot of research and talked to quite a few different people and went with Gila and Apache

2-3 years ago I realized I forgot my bow at about 7-8 pm the night before opening morning of deer season lol.. This is a muzzle loader hunt though!

What size do you recommend? 20l or smaller to fit in the panniers?

A 28 inch duffle bag, packed carefully, will carry all the clothing you will need for a week long hunt.
