How long before I need to run the generator?

Power is out from the storm this morning. Got a small chest size deep freeze in the garage full of deer meat. Power has been off for about 4 hours. Haven't opened and ain't gonna. How long do you think we can wait for the power to come back on before I should get the generator going and run the freezer for a while?

I would think it all depends on how well insulated the freezer is, how high the ambient temps are, and how long power has been out for. If you have plenty of fuel for the generator I would go ahead ad crank it up and run it for about an hour or two.

Any idea as to how long the power will be out for?

I imagine you would be safe for 18-24 hours if you haven't opened it and it doesn't sit in the sun. Personally I would crank it at 8-10 hours and let it run for at least 3-4hrs. Sorry your power is out.

If you don't open it, 48 hours depending on the insulation and after that, it's just gonna be super cold. I'd be comfortable at 72 hours...

All the food in there is basically giant chunks of ice. It took my current 7 lb roast 1.5 days to thaw out in a 70 deg house.

This is the key. There is no need to "check" on your stuff, no matter how tempting it may be.
