I have used them on occasion and thats all my brother in law would use. I like them just fine. You need to be careful of the tree you are climbing. Trees like pine that have loose bark use extreme caution. You may think its stuck good but the bark will slip out. Make sure you get tree climbing spurs and not the linesman spurs. Tree spurs have a longer spur on them. The disadvantage is they can be dangerous if you are not paying attention.

How I hunt most of the time, especially out of state. If your safe and careful they are so fast and efficient everything else is comically complicated. But they ain't for everyone.
I as well as a large group I hunt with use them on a national refuge and have for decades and been checked countless times by state and several federal game wardens and all have assured us they where legal to use

There are 2 gaffs. Pole and tree
Me as well as every reputable hunter I know hate tree spikes. We all use pole spikes. Tree are too long and dangerous as well as tear the trees up. Pole are more than enough if you know what your doing. If your hurting your knees? Your doing it wrong or your equipment is set up wrong I can climb for hrs with no pains.
With a safety harness and linemans belt (sometimes2) it's impossible to fall. It's as safe as any other way up a tree
There are trees I hate to climb and trees I won't climb but that's the same with a climber too. Pine with thick bark suck but all pine get sap on you. Hickory... Ain't climbing as well as cedar. Red oak are tough and pin oak are iffy. Post oak, live oak, sweet gum, elm, hackberry, ash, poplar climb easy and cypress is my favorite.
