The Long Road will begin on Friday

Well Folks my 16 year old son will be having Tommy John Surgery on Friday. Then the long road to recovery will begin. He has dreams of playing baseball in College and wants to keep on pushing to get there. I am not asking for any prayers because there are people out there that need it way more than my son. I am just a nervous Dad hoping we are making the right choice for him. I guess you always second guess what you do when it comes to your kids. So just keep him in mind come Friday and hope that everything goes as planned.

Just to let everyone know my son is not a pitcher and did not hurt his arm playing baseball. He hurt his playing football. I also want to say that he played the entire year of baseball mostly as the DH but the last 12 games including all 5 playoff games as the starting catcher. He gutted it out and earned a ton of respect for me. He put his team first and did not complain about the pain one time.

Prayers up for your son. Prayers are deserved by all in my book.

My younger brother who is 20 is about 15 months post Tommy John as a catcher. He had his surgery during his freshman year of college ball and had to red shirt. He continues to work out and is hoping to get to play in college still. If your boy would like to have someone to talk to about his age about Tommy John and what to do and what not to, I'm sure Trevor (my bro) would be more than happy to chat with him.

Good luck to him and to you as well!

Tommy John surgery allowed me to finish my last year of college ball. It was also the best year I had playing. The first 4 months are the hardest. Just keep pushing him and really the only limits he has are the ones he puts on himself. Good luck and prayers.

Mountainman, that would be nice to have his someone to chat with about what he is going thru.

Chunkinlead - how bad was the pain right after surgery for lets say the first week. Then is the rehab of getting the range of motion back the hardest? Just wondering.

God certainly doesn't ration prayers. Definitely going up.

My son had Tommy John when he was a sophomore in high school. He didn't pitch again until he was a senior. He pitched in college and a couple of years in the minors until he had to go in and have some scar tissue removed and cleaned up. He came back from the second surgery and was still throwing 96 for the Skeeters when he hung it up.
It's a long recovery do as the doc says and he will be ok, just don't let him or anybody try to bring him back to soon.
he is going to have a really large and cool scare.

The pain never bothered me. I actually only took the pain meds they gave me the first couple of days because they just made me sleep. Yes the range of motion is the worst. One day I had it in my mind I was gonna straighten it and was pushing down on it with my other hand and the next thing I remember the therapist was waking me up in the floor after I had passed out.
