Let him in? Forcing him to stay where he's scared is just gonna make it worse.

At the very least, give him a secure doghouse that he can feel safe in.

Not uncommon for rescue dogs to be skittish and want to stick with the person who saved them. Think of yourself as the dogs safety blanket.

Let him inside if at all possible. Also, ask your vet about getting him on Zilkene. It really helps calming down dogs, labs in particular. I had a female black lab that had bad separation anxiety and would really get worked up over fireworks and thunder. Zilkene made a HUGE difference....

Only thing that "Sort of" works with our storm anxiety catahoula is a thunder shirt... im still amazed that thing works like it does.

I had the same problem with my lab. If your lab has a real strong desire to retrieve you can try what I did. Every time we had a thunderstorm about to roll in, I would take him outside and start playing fetch with him as the thunder started off in the distance and keep playing until the storm hit. He was afraid of the thunder but his desire to fetch would take over. After doing this over and over during thunderstorms he became less and less afraid of them. It actually got to the point that as soon as he would here thunder he though it was time to start playing fetch. Fireworks were the same but he was never was afraid of guns probably because I introduced him to guns at a early age and they meant to him that there was going to be birds to retrieve. He never was in a real thunderstorm until he was about 6 years old.

Or you can put one of your Tshirts on him its better if your scent is on it. IE you have already worn it.

I was curious if these actually worked. My lab was outside in a severe storm last year and man does she freak out now if there is thunder and lightning.

It does... she settles down... but is still attentive to the storm..but isnt bouncing off the walls or trying to climb up me.

My dogs the same way, he usually tried to get close to me.
We've had him since he was 11 weeks old.
He got shot, now when a gun shoots he yipes and gets ready to retrieve whatever I just shot

Here is an idea....Labs love to eat and I used this as my gun shy remedy. Every day at feed time I got my kid to feed the dog and I would be at other side of the yard and fire a shot with 20 gauge. Each day get a little closer...I then backed off and started with 12 gauge and got closer and closer. Before Bo knew it I was at the gate of his kennel with kid feeding him and I was firing off three rounds and he never flinched. Worked for me!
