How smart are dogs

My blue lacy catches a full grown cotton tail. Has it in her mouth in mid section of rabbit. It's not dead. She takes it to an area that the dirt is soft. Digs a hole, puts this live rabbit in the hole and covers it up but leaves the head above ground. Then she bites it's head and crushes the skull. Then pulls it out of the ground and eats it. I guess she was afraid it would run away.

My GSP had scared me with his intelligence more than a time or two. He loved to sit on the porch swing and then run and chase the squirrels in the backyard. There was a row of oak trees the squirrels figured out they could stay within about 30' of and have time to get to before he could catch them. I came out back one day and didn't see him, he was sitting completely inside the hedge right next to the oak trees with just his muzzle sticking out, waiting on the squirrels

He also figured out that downhill in the hill country terrain almost always holds water. If he gets hot on a hike he will branch off the trail and run downhill until he finds it, even in new areas.
