Big bend backpacking
Do the south rim trail.
Also mule ears. Both are good 1 or 2 night trips. Be prepared to carry all of your water. Up in the mountains there is often good pools of water in the creek beds and there is a spring out mule ears. But depending on the time of year you may not be able to find water along the way. The Chiso's has designated backcountry camp sites that you have to reserve so plan ahead. Down in the desert you can set up just about anywhere.

Not part of a serious backpack gig but yes, The Window is right at the top of the list of things not to miss.

Going to do backcountry on the ranch or the park trails?
I'd use the Chiso's camp site because the weather is quite a bit cooler, but it's usually booked pretty far out. Be sure to top off your tank at Alpine. Keep your doors locked. The ranger at panther junction should be able to recommend trails based on conditions and your skill level. Be honest with yourself on your ability, May is already getting hot, and it's a really big place. I've went this time of year. I was doing 16 miles a day and blew out my knee. I was in good condition, but it can happen to anyone. Luckily the girl with me was in top shape and got me back to camp.
