Uncle Sugar is bringing me to Round Rock for my first road trip. Besides being happy to be back in TX even for a short time, where in Round Rock can I find the best BBQ and Mexican food? My co-driver hasn't been to TX, and I haven't been to Round Rock before.....thanks in advance GS

I don't make it up to RR that often to eat. I used to go to Mesa Rosa up there. If you wanted Cajun - Gumbo's used to be the best in the Austin area (used to be pricy, but EXCELLENT service). I think there is a satellite Salt Lick in RR as well.
Originally Gumbo's had about 10 tables. If you did not arrive an hour before opening, good chance you were not eating there that night. Eventually they took reservations - $100 deposit per table. They have moved, branched out, etc.. since then. Plus it has been 10 years since I made that trip. All of my suggestions should be independently researched - I moved from N. Austin 7 years ago.
Elgin is not all that far away - they have 2 fairly famious BBQ locations. Plus Snows in less than 1hr away (keep going past Taylor). It held the title best in Texas for a few years before Franklins (Austin) took it away.

Mexican Food: Chuys or Drive to Austin and eat Maudi's. Traditional Mexican with some flare and excellent Margaritas, head to Georgetown and try El Monumento
BBQ: Head to Taylor or Elgin, not many places in Round Rock.
Juniors is a bar down town that has excellent bar type food, the burgers are amazing, I always get the pulled pork quesadillas.
Someone mentioned gumbos but there is no longer one in RR that im aware of it's in Georgetown. A better cajun option would be Louisiana Longhorn located right down town in RR.

Chey's is Tex Mex - nothing wrong with good Tex Mex (have eaten at the ones in Austin more times than I can count.
Torchy's is (fast food) kind of yuppy California tacos. That said, they can be very tasty - I have enjoyed their food many times as well (I like their shrimp taco's). Torchy's (in Austin) was very liberal (lots of yutes working there (facial piercings, facial tattoos, indeterminate sexual identity). But lately appears becoming less so, I guess they found out the while liberal yutes give the place a feel, they don't make good employees - plus on occasion some looked so dirty I was hoping they did not touch my food). Do not know the feel for the RR location.Last edited by Mousehunter; 05-08-2015, 08:52 AM.

I'm just hoping the Mexican food is as good as Houston's was. While I am using Per Diem, I do have cash, so no limits on where we can go, other than time/mileage. Don't need any fraud/waste/abuse accusations. Looking forward to trying some or all of these places for dinner. Thanks for coming through GS
