Rat snake, just pet it on the head and let it go.

I see rat snakes in my backyard almost every spring - usually they are climbing trees looking for an easy meal of baby squirrels. I catch and relocate them, mostly so my neighbors dont freak out and kill them. I have tried to explain the good snake/bad snake thing but it falls on deaf ears.

We must have the same neighbors........
I caught a 4 footer last year, showed it to my 3 year old daughter then let it go in the back of my yard.

Two days later one of my neighbors tells me of this huge snake he killed.

Pretty sure that is a Texas cardboard snake also known as a box snake.
