And technically you aren't signing a two year contract, but if you try to stop service before then you have to pay for the phone in full, plus cancellation fee. So basically if you sign up for the next program, you are paying two and a half times what you would if you just but the phone with 2 year contract at the beginning.
If you do the 2 year contract, you pay an extra $25/month for the "in contract" phone for 24 months, $600 total.
If you do the Next plan, you pay an extra $27.50/month for 20 months, $550 total.
At least that's the way it worked out for me with the 10g family share plan.
If you have a different plan, then your results may be different.
For me, I saved $50 and I never had to start another contract with my account.

I agree with this. They are just like car salesmen now. We did the $300 for the phone (two of them) instead of the Next Plan. I am going to refuse to pay anymore than what my previous bill was. Or else I will threaten to switch to Sprint which will buy me out of the AT&T contract.

If you're on the family share plan, your monthly bill likely just went up $50, $25/per phone.
If you have 2 or more phones and you're NOT on the family share plan, you're likely paying more than you need to.
Before I switched, I had one phone with 2GB and another with 3GB. (Second phone was added later and 2GB plan was no longer available.)
I switched to the 10GB family share plan(doubling my total data), and my bill went down about $20.
