Well once again we had a great time in Throckmorton on what is turning into a hunt for the kids and the fathers/grandfathers/friends are just there for the backing up..
The birds weren't as thick as they have been in the past but we were also competing against thousands upon thousands of acres of surrounding sunflowers mixed in with our smaller patches of sunflowers. The guys North and South of us were lightin' it up morning and evening. If the fathers and friends (including myself) would have taken better advantage of our opportunities, that number would have been a little higher.
We did however manage just over 160 birds in the two hunts.
I don't have any kids yet but I get some great enjoyment out of these boys as I've watched several of them "grow up" over the past 5 years. The taller lanky kid, Nathan, is my buddy's oldest and he has gone from a cumbersome OK 20 gauge shooter to a lights out 12 gauge shooter with effortless form in the past two years. I talked some smack with him and Collin (white shirt) over the previous two weeks (we call Nathan, Hollywood and Collin, Bootlip in reference to their not so favorite duck the spoony/shovelor). Needless to say, we won't be talking anymore smack .....they'll keep the nicknames but those boys can flat out shoot. The others are pretty salty with their 20 gauge single shots...especially Nash with the red ear muffs.
Ohhh and my Ranger and 22 pistols are officially "kid broken in"....
I don't think there is a turtle left on the place. Abby, my lab, is flat out beat......I dont think she has moved since we got home yesterday at 3 except for food, water and the bathroom.
Here are a few pics.....I would have taken more but my camera fell in the icy water of my cooler five minutes after I arrived at camp and it spent the weekend drying out.
