    Unit 80 Colorado?

Anyone hunt there before that has any helpful information they don't mind sharing please PM me. Planning a hunt if I get drawn or maybe just buy my OTC if not. Wanting to backpack in for a couple days at a time and will be based out of South Fork. Both Elk and mule deer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What season are you hunting? Access is very good in most of the public land so it will be pretty busy. There aren't a ton of backcountry type areas close to South Fork in 80, you'll need to go to the wilderness area in the southern part of the unit to get very far off the beaten path.

I hunted elk last year during the 2nd rifle season and never got on them. Thick stuff thats hard to glass around Del Norte Peak. But they are there. You should see plenty of mule deer and more does than you care to see. I saw a few good shooter bucks but didn't have a tag.

I put in for mule deer archery. Waiting to see about the draw before I decide on OTC Elk. I did see the hunter numbers were high in the unit but I have a house to use as a base in South Fork so Unit 80/81 were my choice. Looked at some others but being my first year out West I figured close to the house could give me some options to move around a few places every few days. I will start gaining points and look into Unit 76, 78 and 79.

I was looking more at the Southern part of the unit and into 81 as a starting point for my scouting trip this Summer.

Good luck, Ive never hunted 80. Ive been hunting 62 for lots a years. Always camped near road when hunting mule deer but they have almost diappeared the area I hunt so am now hunting elk. Packed in on foot last year and found a nice spot towards the end of the archery season. Hauling horses this year to see if we can get back alittle further and stay a little longer..
