    My turn... Snake ID, please

Never thought I'd post one of these threads, but I want to be sure before I tell my bud what I think it is. Got this picture from a friend of mine, it's the only picture he has. He said it's been hanging out in his back yard, saw it three different times. He lives in League City, Gulf Coast area but not on the coast. I'm thinking it's a Cottonmouth, but I'm not 100% certain. Most I've had dealings with were much darker and didn't have as much defined pattern.

I live in Kemah and have killed a few like that. I have a retention pond behind the house and get them from time to time. I would agree it's a cottonmouth.

I use a metal rake to hold them down and loping sheers to take the heads off,

That could be a diamond backed water snake. I'm not a snake expert though.

I vote water moccasin as well.

Although people always talk about head and eye shape, water moccasins typically are fairly short and get fatter with maturity.

The shape of their head isn't the best way to tell. Watermarks will flatten their heads to look like a poisonous snake so it's really hard to tell the difference.

Cottonmouth fo sho! Look at the head and the black line running from the nose to the back of the head through the eye. That is one definitive characteristic of cottonmouth at any age

Eye band, pattern, stump tail -cottonmouth. They also cruise with their head at a 45* angle like shown
