      it looks like a juvenile cottonmouth, but the tail is throwing me off a tad. That's about the only snake I'll kill.

            What shape were his pupils? They look round in that picture.

            Looks like a Banded Water snake that feels threatened. They will flatten their heads out like that to appear bigger. Kind of resembling a venomous snakes head shape.

                    Is it's nose turned up?

                    It's hard to tell but looks like it could be a hognose.

                      I see the same thing. If it were a Cottonmouth I'd think he'd be showing you where he got his name. You usually see the insides of their mouths when they're threatened.

                              I rescind my previous vote. On further inspection I have to concur that it is a broad banded water snake.
