After you calm down from your next hunt, you need to send it in to Bowhunter Magazine or Elk Foundation or something. More people need to read this! If I had been on that hunt, I think I would have had to call a time-out, reach down and pick my heart up off the ground. Awsome story. Good luck next week.
Something about the bugle of a big ole bull elk. Like Will Primos says its good for soul. Enjoyed the stroy! Taking a buddy elk hunting next week, hopefully we can have some luck like you had. Keep after him and I hope you get him.
Great story.
Your refusal to take what you consider to be an unethical shot is admirable. However, not everyone feels the same as you do about that shot. The September 2003 issue of Petersen's Bowhunting has an article entitled Take the Shot? It is mostly about taking a frontal shot at elk. The "From the Editor" section is a discussion of the article and frontal shots. The editor does not advocate this shot. The author of the article does advocate the shot, and gives evidence for why he does so. If I had not read this article, I probably never would have considered taking such a shot.
I also have one elk hunting DVD in which a frontal shot was taken. The bull was easily recovered.
I have not totally ruled that shot out for me. I think there are other, worse shots to take (like a quartering-to shot), that I will not take. I think it is a good idea to think about these things before one finds one's self in that situation.
I hope you get the elk.
