    Windmill info needed...

Have a functioning windmill on the lease. Owner went to pull the pipe for some reason about 10 years ago, got one or two lengths of pipe off and dropped it back down the hole. Its 20-30 food down, you can see it, the entire well is between 60-80 foot deep. I can get the pipe out, at least in theory. However, I have no idea how a windmill pump works, most of the info I found is for a pump that is basically a cap for the well and needs a concrete pad, this one has no such concrete pad so dont know if the pump is in the hole attached to the pipe. I just want to know what I'm getting into here, I'd like to get it pumping again soon. The diameter of the hole in the ground is about 8' and the pipe is 1 1/2".

    Any info greatly appreciated.

Also if you have idea or experience on fishing the pipe out of the hole. I was going to weld a half circle, 4" diameter fixture to the end of the fishing pipe, rig a noose out of steel cable, get the cable around the half circle fixture and get the noose around the pipe, pull it tight and lift the pipe and pump?

I hope you mean an 8" dia hole, 8' is a huge well

No idea how they actually work but would like to get one eventually for the well at the house

I'm pretty sure a windmill has a similar type down hole pump as an oil well with a pumping unit on it. There's a pump downhole with a standing valve on the bottom that lets fluid enter the pump on the upstroke and then there's a traveling valve that is attached to the rod string that travels (strokes) inside the pump barrel to lift the fluid up through the pump into the tubing and to the surface.

But I could be completely wrong on that. Lol.

Yeah it was 8" lol. If it was 8' I'd get my harness and ropes out and go grab it.

Yeah, I finally found a site that explains it. No dead where the pump head is so might have to get a new one, apparently the bottom pump has leather cups that seal it and they wear out. Probably why they were pulling it.

There is a gentleman out of Devine I believe, he is a pump guru, windmill fixer kind of guy. My uncle called him out to help and he helped us pull out the old wooden shafts and replace the leather cups. After learning that way, we were able to do the others on that ranch. It was a cattle lease for us, so it was a biggie to have water out there. Hope this helps

I pulled quite a few growing up. There could be several reasons worn leathers , hole in the pipe, etc. Whatever you do be careful. Go to the local feed store and ask if they know somebody. It's not rocket science but you need to know what your doing so you don't get hurt or screw things up. Good luck

We have done everything from pulling the sucker rods out of the hole to pulling all the casing and replacing the leathers in the pump. Most of it is pretty easy to work on.
