I caught him in the trinity river , I was fishing for bait , caught him on 10 pound line on my perch pole , luckily I could walk out in water to grab him or he would have broke my line

In Dallas, the North Park Aquarium has a huge snapper, or at least they did a couple of years ago. Definitely worth the price of admission. They don't (or didn't when I was there) have any idea how old he/she is or was. But it was huge!

The other one we caught in Caney Creek in Bowie county. He looked twice the size as the first one. Didn't really catch him, found him in the shallow creek bed traveling between deep water holes. Held him there with a rope for a couple of hours until grandpa and other adults could see what we caught, then we left him alone.
I caught one that was in the 75 to 100 lb range about 15 years ago. I called the Houston zoo and they told me that they didn't take in wild animals. I've seen it a couple of times since then, crossing the road by my parent's house.

                        Times sure have changed.

Houston Zoo picked mine up mid-60's, also picked up a Gray Wolf a couple years before. Lady at the end of the street thought dogs were getting into her trash. She moved the trash cans into the back yard and left the gate open, then closed the gate. Her 8' wood fence had them trapped. The dog catcher was called, and he called the police, and they called the Houston Zoo. There were two but in trying to snare them one got away. Last recorded sighting of a gray wolf in Harris County.

Me and my buddies found one in my back yard about that size when I was a kid. He was coming from the lake headed towards a pond about a half mile away. I've always wondered how they know where different bodies of water are....

IIRC, this one was pushing 200 lbs and caught in a drainage ditch outside LeBeau, LA (near Opelousas, LA) I believe it was estimated at 150 yrs old , and was caught in the 1960's

next time I'm in the area I'll get the skinny on weight and age, since the plaque has all the details. The cypress and glass display case is the size of a large business office desk
