What are you holding in? I would probably concrete every third post, anyway.

Just tamp them tight. No cement needed. Cement will rot your post quicker.

Skip the wood and use .065 steel post cost won't be that much more plus less headache over time.

I cement each post, steel posts are better but about 3x the price of rated 4x4 posts. I just add a 50# bag around the post dry and then add water. I'm assuming you are taking about a privacy fence

I put a split rail wood fence around 3 acres at my house about 10yrs ago concrete every post bottom seems good tops are rotting, next will be a pipe fence should last as long as me.my post are 7' apart. .

yes, cement. No concrete does not cause your pole to rot. Taper the concrete at the top like a cone and it will push water away from the post. As most have said, I would go with steel posts.

                  steel posts @ Home Depot, $12.98, a 4x4x8 post is almost $10.

I just use a 2x2 and tamp the dirt around the post. The goal is to put all the dirt back in the hole. Then you know it is tamped good enough.

I've been pricing this and 4x4x8 post is 8.67 while metal 2" post is 22.84 at HD

Find a metal surplus dealer in your area.... I would never buy any steel from HD or Lowe's.

I saw and keep going back to your thread. . It's a little far, but could come have Harley's rifle tested at the Eley test range and make a day of it.
