Big ol tom down yesterday evening! I'm 6' 2". That is a big bird! Lol
25# 11" beard with 1 1/4" spurs.
My first thunder chicken, wish it was with a bow...Oh well...Waiting on the new sight...had a blast, though!
Not too shabby for my first thunder chicken!
Alan, a tbher and I left my house 4:15 this morning to his lease. We got there, situated in the blind. I smell pigs twice, Alan heard pigs as well but we did not see em.
As soon as light breaks, we use slate and box call to try entice the birds to come in, good enough the birds came in later on...5 hens, 3 jakes...I tried the slate, Alan said that the jakes responded which was cool.
We watched Jakes fighting each other at the same time...got it on the video. Waited until about 10:30 before head out to different spot.
Set up at different spot, called them in, no luck...We left to go to town, to eat lunch.
Came back, Alan put me in different blind while he sit in other one. We called em, Alan said the birds were gobbling and gobbling, about 200-300 yards out.
I kept on using both slate and box call, nothing was happening...phone service was bad, had hard time trying to text Alan, then all of sudden I saw three jakes, I think, about 50 yards to my right, walked across from left to right, behind the dirt road but on other side of fence.
I tried to call em in hard, did not faze em...Texted Alan, he responded saying that he saw em, too but was too far...then he texted me few minutes later that the Big Ol Tom was on his way to my spot!
I lit up! I was like, where!?!? Where is it, Did I miss it cause there was lag in time because of bad cellular service so I was like I hope he did not walked opposite direction from me...
I kept an eye out, kept looking and good enough, he walked across from left to right front of me about 80 yards out. Alan was not kidding when he says big tom!
He stood out like a sore thumb!
I was like holy cow but he was not coming towards to me. I contemplate whether to get out and do a run and gun on him...but saw that he walked towards to me last minute, on a dirt road...I fixated my camera in that direction where I would expect him to come in.
I started on slate call, he walked towards to me but still on dirt road, I say ok, this is working, as soon as he came in hot, he turned! Towards to the fence line!
That is not Alan's property line, I was like oh man! I switched to box call, started calling in hard, he turned back towards to me for like 10 yards, closing in then he turned towards to fence line again!
I am looking at the video camera, and looking at the bird...I knew I did not have time to place the tripod to the right side so I could film it cause he was just yards away from the fence line.
I say heck with this! Grabbed my Rem 870 shotty, place the bead on his arse!
It was about 35-40 yards away, as he was now merely few steps away from the fence line, BOOM! Dropped like a brick!
Kept an eye out on him, texted Alan to let him know I got him!
He stayed down for a while, then start flopping around! I grabbed my shotty, got out of the blind, and ran towards to him, put bead on him but did not have to put another one in him...He stopped moving...rest is history!
Can't thank Alan enough for an amazing day today...Finally got my bird and he is good un! Thank you, brother for everything, and for having me on your place to get this bird!
Looking forward to hog hunting next time around
.

I rarely use shotgun. Maybe once or twice a year. Did not test my patterns but I knew I could trust my old Rem 870 to get the job done and it sealed the deal for me. Couldn't be happier! Gonna do full mount on this bad boy.
