    Frog Hunting With Firearms Advice

Need your thoughts and ideas. Took my son out to our lease this evening, and let him wade around the ponds with a .22 long rifle pistol. He would get within 10 - 20 feet and take the shot, but several times he either did not quite make a good head shot, or missed altogether. I began thinking a .410 to the head would probably anchor the frog right where it stood or floated. Anyone ever use a .410 for frog hunting?

Man I have tried it several times. Seems like no matter what they find a way to jump!

you talking about bull frogs? to eat? or just letting him shoot frogs... if bullfrogs to eat i would think it would be overkill.

That'd work. Unless he's real close then it might grind one into frog burger. But all you need is the back legs for eatin right? Just as long as those are all that's left it won't matter too much what the rest of it looks like. Only downside is .410 shells are expensive.

When we frog hunted the crawfish farm by driving the levees and shooting from the truck, we started with 22's. I ended up shooting a 17mach 2. Did a much better job of "straight legging" them. Another key is knowing where you rifle shoots at close range. Especially true with scopes. I always used a mildot scope. Waters edge used the first dot under the center. 15-25 yards used the center. 25-40 used the first dot up.

I would think he'll have to stand back with a .410 otherwise it will be like throwing a .45 at them at 10 feet.

22 rifle would be easier to be accurate with.

Sounds like overkill to me. Air rifle maybe?

We used open sight 22s when I was a kid. We could rustle up a big bunch pretty fast for my aunt to fry along with some fried sliced taters. Yum!!!
