    Truck Servicing

    Here is the quick scoop....Bought a 2015 F-250 6.7 Power Stroke.

Brought to Dealer (Wife Actually) for Oil Change. Well she noticed a small oils spot in Driveway where she parks (Good Job). Come to find out it was leaking at the Filter, when she sent me pics I could not believe how NASTY the oil looked!!! I am pretty sure they only Changed my Filter and hit me for a hefty $140 Bill-----The 6.7 Takes 17 qts of OIL.

Anyway I tell her to bring it back and demand they change filter and oil and show them how bad oil is....she does so but some jack-wagon tells her oh yea those diesels turn oil black quick. (Mind you it has only been 9 days and Truck may have been driven 300 miles Tops). I told her to tell him "Oh I guess the diesel engine caused it to leak too...huh?)

I will not blast Dealer until I have some GOOD Knowledge from experience.

    So what do ya'll think.

    Here are a few Pics

Yes it only takes a couple of hundred miles to turn the oil in a diesel black, doesn't hurt it... The leak is another matter if it is leaking and not some spillage just dropping off when you got home. But if it is leaking it's probably just a loose filter.. and a 1/4 turn will fix it.

Like said above don't take long for oil to blacken up, in fact if it dosen't you don't have the correct kind of oil in it.

Oil black- normal for a diesel. Sometimes when you take the old filter off the gasket stays on. When they get double stacked like that it will leak.

Oil analysis will tell the truth. One of the main reasons I change my own, and by the way mine doesnt look that black at 500, course I run an oil bypass system and change every 20,000 with an analysis.

I know in my Dodge 5.9 I could change my oil and filter then crank it up and let it run about 1 minute and check the oil level and it would be black as night already. However in my 7.3 powerstroke when I change my oil and filter at 5,000-6,000k interval it still looks and smells like fresh oil. I'm not sure about the 6.7's powerstrokes but I'm sure someone will chime in

Yes it will. Mine looks like that after every oil change, and I do it myself.

Yep I did this once. Was glad I caught it quick!

Been dealing with diesels in the repair end of it for 20+ years....I don't see anything wrong with the color of the oil after a couple hundred miles. Dark oil is the nature of the beast, as far as the leak, could be double oil ring, bad crimp on filter, filter to loose or overtightened, (seen both).

Very True....She Likes to Hunt too!!!

Ok well on my last oil change it did not look that bad after 3000 miles, but I will be checking daily. By the responses above I will not blast the Service Shop, the small leak on filter did not bother me as much as the Dark oil-----especially after a $140 Change geez!!!

Used to cost me right at $90 to do mine myself (6.0 took 4 gallons and one quart) so $140 is about right especially for a dealer. Diesels are totally different beasts from gas and maintenance costs are crazy high (one of the reasons I no longer have it.). Just a comparison of prices between my f-250 and titan:

                          Oil change: $90 vs $25
                          Air filter : $99 vs $10
                          Alternator: $250 vs $139
                          Tires: $1200 vs $750
                          Fuel filter: $60 vs $0

That's just the ones I can remember off the top of my head and I did all the work except the tires!

Diesels are great if you need the pulling power or have the extra funds for fuel and maintenance to blow but gassers sure are cheaper and my titan is rated to pull 9500 lbs which is more than I'll ever need!

I have owned Diesels awhile ...My last one was 2010 Dodge 6.7 and it was not that high but it wasn't 17 quarts either.....but $140 for just a filter change I will be ******!!!

I hope they did not charge you for 17 quarts of oil, mine only take 13. And yes the oil does get dirty fast in these trucks. For $140.00 now I know why I change my own oil.
