    Rebarreling a Remington 7 (7-08 to .308)

I'm not a gun guy, so bear with me if this is an ignorant question...

I recently came across a deal on a Remington Model 7 in 7-08 that was just too good to pass up. So I bought it, even though I was really in the market for a .308.

It just dawned on me the other day that since this is a short action Model 7 and the 7-08 is just a necked-down .308, I might just need to rebarrel this gun to get what I wanted in the first place.

Is this a good option? How much would it cost me and who should I find to do it?

If I do it, what do I do with the 7-08 barrel? Can it be re-used?

Thanks for the answers to I'm sure what seem like stupid questions.

    John

    John,

Have you shot it yet...if that 7-08 prints tiny groups then I would be hard pressed to spend $$$ on a .308 since they are so similar.

This is a hunting gun, right??

by the time you buy the barrel and have the smith install it, youd be better off buying a 700 in 308 and call it good.

used factory take off barrel prices vary from $50 to $125

new custom barrel price ... ballpark $325 +/- depending on maker

barrel install (fit, chamber, crown) ... $175~250 depending on GS

once old barrel removed and prior to chambering, most will recommend truing and blueprinting action ... $125-175

if you decide to re-barrel from 7-08 to 308, your smoking deal will soon become a $600+ investment on top of what you already spent. Now your likely close to $1000

ditto others, shoot it as a 7-08 since the right load may achieve sub-MOA accuracy

or if you truly want a 308, sell the 7-08 and buy your desired 308

Trade you 7mm-08 for a 308, easy trade to make as the 7mm-08 is the more desirable rifle.

You can buy a factory take off Model 7 barrel for $75 and have a gunsmith change out the barrels for $100.

            Yup.

And it's probably a fool's errand anyway. Just curious. You know how it is, you get it in your head that you want a .308, and then... ha, ha.

I'll shoot what I got and see how it does.

Don't get me wrong, I think the 7-08 is an ideal whitetail round. Just always thought the .308 was a bit more versatile from an ammo point of view.

The 308 might have the edge getting into the heavier bullets & if you wanted to make a target rig...I see no reason to mess with it, especially if it shoots good.

I love that round & shoot the 120gr Barnes...low recoil & a deer killing machine.

Ditto, we have 2 that see plenty of use every year with the exact same ammo

I saw those 120-grain low recoil rounds. Probably what my daughter will be feeding through it.

What I was wondering was if the swap would be pretty affordable, and reversible if I ever changed my mind.

                    I suppose not though.

The swap is affordable if you can afford it and reversible later if you wish.

It's just not a swap many gun guys would support.

Save borh recoil lugs with each bbl and you should be able to swap them out as desired.
