    Any gmail experts?

    Hey guys,

I'm having a weird email morning. Every now and then I try to go in and clean up my email. I, like most people, have a couple of accounts - one for signing up for stuff, one for promotions, one for personal use, etc. That said, my personal use one stays pretty clean. Or so I thought.

I was deleting the few spam messages I get, right? Well, I checked my 'trash' messages and got curious. Here's what happened: I had a piece of email from Hotwire that I deleted - it went out of my inbox and into trash (normal so far). I searched for 'Hotwire' in my gmail search feature and suddenly showed up with about 40 hotwire emails. When I narrow the search to just my inbox, nothing comes up. When I narrow the search to trash, the one I deleted comes up. But when I search my inbox with no filter, there they are - 40 emails (or so). Does anyone know how to click on an email that (apparently) doesn't have a label and find out where it's tagged in your mail? Also - does this make any sense?

The exact same thing happens when I search for emails from my credit union. I can search for their email address in general search - 15 items. Inbox only, 2 items. Trash only, 9 items. That math doesn't work out. All I'm trying to do is make sure I have good organization, but I don't know how to actually locate where gmail is putting my stuff. Anyone help?

    -LaS.

Do you have your email set up to conversation view? It will put all of them in one "email" essentially and when you click on it, there will be multiples there that you have to scroll down and click to read individually.... It will also delete ALL of them currently in the conversation at the time of the delete. You can turn it off in settings.

This is a possibility as well as your spam folder.

I dont ever delete an email from gmail. When I am done with an email it gets archived. Meaning it doesnt get deleted and doesnt show up in the inbox. but if I need it I can search for it. I have had the same business email for 8 years and have never deleted an email and still have tons of storage.

It sounds like you archived a few emails.

To clean up your inbox without deleting your Gmail messages, you can archive or mute the messages. Learn how archive & mute work The “All Mail” section displays messages that you archive or

Jenn - I just turned conversation view off (I did have it on) and it did expand to reveal some more emails that I wasn't aware of (thank you for that).

Playa - double checked my spam, and it's empty.

I think the ultimate question here is - how do I find out where these 'ghost' emails actually ARE? I mean, they don't have the little 'inbox' tag or any of my other labels attached to them. And ... they aren't actually IN my inbox.. o_O. Gmail's pulling a fast one on me.

If you select the folder that says ALL MAIL. They should be in there.

I think you're absolutely right. My inbox just went from 200 to 39,902. I'm not making that up. Productivity meter - 0.

New 6 million dollar question - does gmail automatically archive? I mean, I've never purposefully gone in and said, 'archive everything from mom,' or anything like that. At some point will it do this for you? Or have I shennaniganed myself?

Are you searching unread mail only or all mail in inbox? Some times that can be the issue.

No... I'm gonna bet that you are doing what you think is deleting from your phone and it's actually archiving them. If I remember correctly the default setting on the iPhone (maybe android too... I always change it) in the mail app is to archive, not delete...

I'll email you my mailing address where to can send me my $6 Million!

All mail. Nothing that comes up shows unread.

no gmail wont archive unless you tell it to.

have you been hitting archive instead if delete? Its on the bar.
                          Archive-Spam-Delete.

There is nothing wrong with not deleting and just archiving. You wont ever see those emails unless you search for them. It has saved my butt may times to be able to go back and find an email.

Yes what nursejenn said. my phone only archives. It doesnt delete.

This, Also when I open from my android it will usually ask what I want to do to it i usually just back out unless i specify where to put it then i send it to a specific folder. BUT you can also click on an email without opening it and archive it too I have done that and get the confusing issues you are having right now.

Jenns got it right, I figured this out a couple of months ago that all my "deleted" emails where getting archived instead of deleted because I always used my phone to check it!
