Got a 14 Jon boat. Had it for a while. If I put a transom 30 lbs trolling motor on it is that gonna be enough to push me aeound? I'm just fishing shallow water by the bank and not taking it out in the middle of the lake or anything

I have a 30lb trolling motor on my 14ft semi-v and it got me back to the ramp 2 miles when I ran out of gas once. I got passed by kayakers but it got me back. It's perfect for maneuvering and working a bank but for covering any distance you'll have to be patient. ...and make sure you have a paddle in case the battery drains.

I would spend a tad more and get the 55lb thrust. It will do everything you want and then some. If you ever need to buck the wind the power will be there. Best upgrade my old fishing partner ever did on his old marsh rig. Once you get your outboard you can rotate the head (on the trolling motor) 180 deg and mount it on the bow.

I thought I wanted to kayak fish so I got a kayak and paddled across west bay from San Luis Pass Bridge to the other side of Bird Island. Got back and sold the kayak. (I did not have the right kayak for this) When I got back I hung it up for five years then eventually sold it and got me a 22 foot center console. Too much work. Motors are way better.oh about your trolling motor it will be enough for a nice day. If you get any amount of wind it will be a little slower getting back. Get an awesome battery not just a cheapo and it will help out a lot.

If it's not already, don't forget to register the boat if you're going to have a motor on it (even if it only has a trolling motor). to answer your question, 30lbs will be alright I would think, as long as you aren't constantly running it.
Just an FYI and to maybe save you or someone else a ticket if they read this:Last edited by bho0351; 03-10-2015, 08:53 AM.

Think your question has been answered pretty well only I will add, that troller will "pull" your boat thru the water much more efficiently than it will "push" it. If it were me, I'd get one and put it on the front, not the back. I built a bowfishing rig and use a transom mount troller with a bracket I fabricated so I could use it on the front. Most trollers just have a screw below the head that you can remove, rotate the head 180 degrees so it steers easily from the front with the handle pointing into the boat.
