    Welder Looking for Work

We made good friends with Steve and Bernadette when my wife and I were married 25 years ago. We all went our separate ways keeping in touch a couple of times a year. In January, Bernadette called to say that her 19-yr old son had been hired as a welder in Galveston and could he live with use during his 3-month probationary period. We of course said yes and welcomed Forrest. He did great and was promoted to welder from assistant on day one but our weather has not been kind to him. He's getting over the flu, strep throat and had an upper respiratory infection a few weeks ago which all caused him to miss too much work. As a result, he was let go today.

He's on his way home, devastated and I am reaching out to the GS for direction. Where does a welder go for employment? Where do you look for jobs? He has a great work ethic and is apparently a good welder. Any help would be appreciated and your prayers as I visit with him shortly would be appreciated.

Aluminum, mild steel, flux core and SMA is what he says. Since he's just starting out, he doesn't yet have his own equipment.

There are so many pipeline welding jobs in Brazoria/ Matagorda county it's not funny. Driver, Down South, Gulf Coast Pipeline services, and a dozen others in the area.

Pipeline jobs, you need a rig truck and CONTACTS!! If you don't know the welding boss or somebody on the line, your chances of getting on is near to zilch!!!
If the boy knows how to Tig, he can pretty much go anywhere he wants right now. This is the time of the year for shutdowns and turnarounds.
I think there are a few sites he can look at. One off hand is rig zone and (I think) road tech. Just have him goggle welding jobs!!

Unfortunately, no. There are a couple of field offices around Angleton he could visit and knock on a door or two. Intersection of FM2004 and FM523 SE of town, and on Hwy 35 headed to West Columbia just before the Brazos River crossing, on the south side of the road.

I work for a construction staffing company. We're slow on welding, but we're always taking applicants because we never know when we will get hit. We mainly do pipe welding but I'm working on getting a company signed up who should have some structural welding jobs. Shoot me a PM

Best thing to do if he wants to be on the pipeline is go and try and hire out as a helper. He will learn alot and i believe they're making 14 or 16 an hour and 80 a day per diem, which comes out to around 1400 a week. If he can save money and buy him a rig and is a good helper he could possibly get a test later on. Getting hired on is the hard part best thing to do is show up at the yard every morning and wait for a spot.
