    Galvanized plumbing question

I have a house that have galvanized pipe plumbing. I need to adress this pretty quick and want to go to PEX. I have heard that I really only need to worry about the horizontal runs. Anyone have an input on this?

Thanks in advance. Btw, I am in SW Houston if someone has a reputable plumber they have used (not someone you know, but someone you have used first hand).

    Thanks again.

I would replace everything you can possibly access, even if it means some drywall repairs......

I'm guessing your house was built in the 80's with some of the Chinese pipe?

From what I've seen, the pipes over the garage seem to be where most of the problems originate.

My son's house had the same problem. We replaced all the piping with PEX - 3/4" on all main supplies and 1/2" on all takeoffs - took us 4 days!

I would say replace it all. Due to the water chemistry in that part of the state the inside of those galvanized pipes are most likely full of corrosion deposits and that 1/2 inch pipe is only letting 1/8 inch flow of water or less. When you cut out a section of pipe you will see what I am talking about. And if you see the corrosion deposits make sure to replace the pipe all the way to the brass pipe connection on your side of the water meter. I have seen many plumbers cut the galvanized pipe a foot or so from the meter tail to make their connection and leave that galvanized pipe in the line which defeats the purpose of replacing the line.

            Replace it all!

I am not always a fan of most of the new piping but I am digging this PEX stuff so far.

thanks for the replies so far. The house was built in the early 60's. I know one long section of the hot water supply was cut out and replaced, but do not know how long ago that was.

Surprised the galvanized lasted this long. If you leave any of it, it won't be long before you'll be replacing it so do it all now.
