Need help from the heating and A/C guys.

Wife called a little bit ago and said something was wrong with our central air unit. She states the heater will kick on and run for about a minute and then kick off and then kick back on after about a minute. She said it did this all night. Said the house was warm and it was blowing hot air just cycling on and off.

Does this sound like the thermostat going out? If not what could it be. I wont be getting home till late tonight, so trying to figure out what I'm looking at then I get home.

    Thanks, Jeff

Hard to tell could be a couple things.

fan has to run for the furnace to run.
there a a couple of t-stats that can keep it from running. If I recall at least one is resettable.

But best to get someone to come look at it. Just be aware that they will say it is xx yrs old and try to sell you a new one.

Yeah im ready for the "you need to replace" spill. We have been in this house 8 years so I don't know how old unit it.

      Thanks

The fan would be first on my list to check.

You can check the t-stats for continuity and replace, but you need to know why they tripped (if they are bad). Sometimes it "is there time" (get weak) sometimes there is a problem causing them to trip.

I found a bird in my fan once...

If it is a gas furnace there are a few different things that could cause this - flame rollout sensor, pressure switch, and hi limit to name a few.

Jeff, if you have a tent, I have a small firepit to give your wife.
Sleeping bags and a firepit will keep them warm.
Home heating is not that hard.
You still trying to win the BigNasty?

When you can, go look at he furnace and see if it's giving off an error code. With flashing lights. If so post the number of blinks. That will tell you exactly what's wrong most of the time.
              What brand unit?

You need to determine if the burner is going out or if the fan is cycling off. If it is the burner I would check the flame sensor. If it is the fan and the burner flame looks good check the fan cycling switch.

Could be several things causing it but something is tripping one of the limit switches within your furnace. Could be high flame, no exhaust, or not enough fan speed but based on the fact that it's still heating the house makes me want to guess one of your flame limit switches, probably the high or low flame.

Looks like several others beat me to it.

As stated above, you could go upstairs and read your error display code via number of flashes and it should give you a breakdown on the back of the door panel.

                        Thanks again everyone

This happens all the time, don't be too hard on her because it will do it again and she will have plenty of comebacks . May still be best to atleast have it serviced, there is lots of safety procedures and steps a furnace goes through and could just be a matter of something being dirty and need a little cleaning.

Is it a gas furnace or electric?
