    Some Hunting Questions Before I Go.

    Hey everyone I had a couple questions I can't fully seem to find the answer to so i thought i would ask it here

    I'm going to lavon public land March 6th and 7th to hunt for hog.

    I'm bow hunting and bringing my nephew with me and I just wanted to bring extra protection and bring my pistol out there but i don't have a CHL. Someone told me I can bring it out hunting as long as it is from my house to the hunting spot and then back sort of like going to the range is this true?

    Also what size coolers do you all use for hog and deer? And do you get ice before you go hunting or before you quarter it?

    Last would be after you stick a hog how long should you wait to retrieve it because I know it will be warmer in march and I just want to make sure I don't let the meat spoil waiting.

    Thanks that's all the questions I can think of right now

    Question 1) I'm not sure.
    Question 2) 60 qt.
    Question 3) Get ice before the hunt.
    Question 4) Depends on shot placement.

      Thanks dropem and I found out about the handgun question.

      It says. --->

      Q: Can I openly carry a firearm in Texas?
      A: It depends. In the case of handguns, the answer is “no,” meaning essentially that you can’t strap a weapon on your hip and walk around town. However, you may openly carry a sidearm if you’re hunting.

          Are you hunting the corps land at lake lavon?

                A big no on the handgun on COE property. The hogs are more scared of you anyways. Last time I went out there I stuck a hog less than 10yds away with good pass thru. I waited an hour or so before tracking the blood trail. Ended up pushing it deeper into the woods to the thick stuff and never found it. Hogs are tough. You have to shoot them way more towards the front than you might think. You will hear the death gurgle or know by your blood trail if you will be able to find it. Lots of hogs all over COE. Just have to be in the right place at the right time. As long as we aren't in the dog days of summer, you should be fine with the meat. Quarter them up and put it in a trash bag. Get it to your cooler as soon as you can, and you should be fine.

                  also...be sure to get your permit before going out there. It is free. Game Warden does check on the area.

                            also does anyone know if you can use that hog juice there? i know it says no corn or baiting but the juice is more of a scent attractant. (not sure if there is any difference )
