Didn't read the Article but I was hearing the radio yesterday and it basically said the same thing in the OP description but on the radio it said Kyle texted Littlefield "this guy is nuts" and Littlefield responded something like "Ya I know, and he is sitting right behind me, Watch my 6".
This is also what was said
The defense attorney will try to argue the shooter was believed to be in a psychotic state and belived to have been driven about 2 plus hours away and he thought Kyle and Littlefield were going to kill him out in the gun range and that was why he did what he did.
Again this is what was said on the Radio yesterday, not any of my opinions.

That text will only help the defense, I'm afraid.

I think everyone is aware of this, so lets give him a fair trial.....and hang him.

The whole concept he did it, we admit it but he should be found "not guilty" by reason of insanity. Total BS law/process or what ever you want to call it. IMHO another process inserted into the legal process to funnel more dollars into the legal industry. Laws are made by lawyers and politicians.

Why not just a ****, he is "guilty by reason of insanity" and set punishment based on that. "not guilty" but he did it we admit that ? where is the common sense ?

The text won't help the defense because Kyle was not qualified to diagnose him as insane. The phrase calling someone "Nuts" is used all the time and the prosecutor will clear this up with the jury. Most killers at some time in their lives were called "nuts" by someone, not a grounds for an insanity verdict.

I heard two men saying they think Routh might have been offered the bounty that was placed on Kyle.
                  is that even possible?

Well there is no doubt he is nuts, no one in there right mind would do what he did. So now that we have determined he is nuts, let's hang him so he doesn't do it again.

The text might help the defense ... but not by Kyle's "nuts" diagnosis. If he says he saw the two men texting, whispering, and otherwise "plotting" against him ... he could have had some paranoid thoughts and felt that HIS life was in danger. Wouldn't be surprised if the defense takes that kind of a tack ... an improperly reasoned (due to insanity) self defense strategy.

An investigation by reporters say that he never saw any combat in Iraq, never got off the ship in Haiti either. The guy stole Kyle's truck and Seal pistol, then bragged and said "he sold his soul for a truck". He's guilty and not insane. The prosecution isn't seeking the death penalty either from what I've heard.

Why? Sounds far fetched. He had been taken to a mental hospital twice prior to killing Kyle for threatening to hurt family members. Had a recent DWI. Told his sister he traded his soul for Kyle's new truck. Sounds more like an insanely unstable person than someone collecting a bounty.

I think the defense has an uphill battle to prove insanity. In Texas, insanity is a hard sell to juries. The defense has already stipulated that Routh murdered Kyle and Littlefield - that's pretty huge for the defense to agree that their client committed the crime and tells you they don't have much of a case. The lawyer's only hope is the insanity plea.

Afterwords, in the elevator ride down, he tried to be friendly and I ignored him. A wise man said afterwords that he was just doing his job and we can't take it personally. It was hard not to when he was questioning my integrity and the integrity of the case. He took a plea deal, the stop was by the book.
I love it when some scumbag defense attorney does everything they can rip you apart on the stand, question your integrity, accuse you of lying and then later wants to shake hands and buy you lunch.

                                "No hard feelings, right Chief?".

Wrong, D-bag. You insulted my character and my name. I'd rather starve then eat with swine.
