    Hunting Rig Question

I'm curious as to how most guys set up their hunting trucks/jeeps. I see all of these threads about adding this item or that item or how big of tires can I stuff under the fender wells with this much lift, what size winch do I need etc etc but how many actually add lockers or spools to their differentials? IMO the number 1 basic must have items for off roading but I've been stuck a lot, ok a whole lot I understand some people don't need them for this or that reason but time and time again I see rigs with big meaty tires, a winch and no traction control devices installed because their stuck in 5"s of mud with one back tire spinning Just curious as to how most people view this and the reasoning,

All about the show and looks and less about the effectiveness for most!

Example: Yeti's, big jacked up trucks that dont go offroad.

Just get a late 90's Tacoma, add a small lift, some agressive tread, and have no worries.

In Colorado and Moab, I never really had any problems with 33's ,lockers and winch. Now there are definitely areas that require much more but that is rock crawling. A good driver with that equipment can go just about anywhere.

Winch would be nice, but I always carried a come-a-long and chains. I'm old enough now I try to avoid getting stuck at all cost.

I replaced the unreliable 6cyl in my cj7 with a 4bt cummins that is ridiculously reliable. Swapped old stock axles with heavier duty axles with warn locking hubs. 4x4 sucks without locking hubs...High torque rated clutch to handle the 4bt. Stripped the whole stock wiring harness to make my own. No fuse blocks or anything to deal with, only have about 10 wires in the whole rig all with inline fuses. If something does happen in the field theres not much to trouble shoot. 1 check is the motor getting power, 2 is it getting fuel. No computers or anything to worry about. Most just do highracks, skinning racks, coolers and spotlights.... I went all out to make my jeep the most reliable ranch ride

I won't stereo type but the new thing around here is the wheels wider than the tire, when you can see the rim sticking out past the truck your following that has 38" tires,, Houston we have a Mall Crawler lol

Wish I had dads old '64 Chevy shortbed step side, we took that old truck into places some of the rock crawlers would be skeered of. The way most vehicles are made now days, you almost have to semi-rebuild to suit your needs, since I'm lazy and broke, I take my stock truck as close as I can then walk the rest.

I always made more sense to me to put a winch on the rear than the front. First, if you're stuck changes are you want to go backwards to get out of the mess, not forwards to got into and through it, and if you were pulling somebody out of the mess, I'd want my front wheels as far from the mess as possible. Just my random thought and comment.

Or have hitch receiver on front and back and put your winch on a hitch mount. Then, you can put it on the front or back.

                              Leave the mall crawlers alone
