And the vertical / horizontal adjustments- are they firm with click ?
    Thanks for help.
I would appreciate this as well

Anyone that got some have vortex vipers to compare to?
        Curious on that comparison

I got busy at sundown, but I took the spotting scope (Brunton 20-60x80mm Eterna) outside just before complete dark. There are street lights and a few porch lights on houses, so it's not dark down my street. But it's not brightly lit either. I was pretty impressed with the brightness as well as the sharpness of the scope. I took it out at lunch in bright sunlight, and the sharpness was great. Not quite as sharp around the edges as it is in the center, but not much difference. MUCH better than the Vortex Diamondback spotter I had once before. I could easily read signs and license plates 1/2 mile away.

It's not quite as sharp and bright as a buddy's Leica of similar power and size, which is better than the Swarovski he used to have. But for the $450 I paid for the Brunton, it's very impressive.

elkaholic, after a few days now, how does the Icon compare to the Eterna?

          My initial dislikes:
          1. The soft case fits poorly. It's too short, and the zippered openings aren't lined up with the tripod collar foot or the focus knob. I'll be looking for an after-market soft case.

          2. It needs slightly more eye relief. Extending the cup takes your eye too far away from the eyepiece, so the image isn't full in the scope. About 1/2 way out is the right spot for good eye relief.

Just got mine today and haven't shot it and I don't own any high dollar scopes so keep that in mind. Eye relief seems fairly forgiving. Like most scopes I have used you have to be close but not perfect. The adjustments seem to be solid. They do click and you can feel each stop. You don't need a screwdriver or coin to make the changes, the turrets can be moved with fingers only. There is a paralex(sp) adjustment on the front of the scope and a quick focus on the eye piece. The focus on mine seems perfect right out of the box. I'll give a more complete review after I have a chance to shoot it, hopefully this Sat. First impressions are good. For the money I think I'm going to be very happy with it, but that might change after a range trip or two. If anyone has any questions I'll be happy to answer them the best I can. Anyone who wants to shoot it at Greenwood Gun Club in Angleton is welcome to meet me at a the range and put put a few down range.

Shane, you might try trimming the correct width of bicycle inner tube and placing it under the eye cup at the distance you need it. I routinely do this for binoculars to keep the eye cups at the distance I need them for my eyes.

Doesn't cost anything if you have a spare tube around, and it's easily removable.

Does that keep the cups from extending out further, or does it just prevent them from closing down all the way?

Shane..My eyes can't distinguish much difference in the two in good light. Maybe you can help me explain this, but in low light, at the highest power, I see an ever so slight yellow tint that I would never notice had I not had the icon next to it for comparison. The icon stays bright throughout the powers, maybe a little sharper out on the edges. I'm reaching here as they are both good, and I wouldn't hessitate to grab the angled Eterna over the Icon if I were looking uphill, or for long sessions. I've menioned before that I actually find it easier to focus the Eterna over the collared focus on the icon. Safe to say if you were reading a license plate at half a mile, it will serve you well on the shooting range, birdwatching, or whatever you ask of it.

It just keeps my eye cups from closing down. I suppose if you cut a wider piece and pulled it over the eye cups like a stocking, it would hold it in place nicely though. It's worth a try. Like I said, if you don't like it, you can always remove it without any harm whatsoever.

Elk, the Icon is probably corrected for CA (chromatic abberation) better than the Eterna. That is one reason high end glass is so darn expensive.

K, I'm gonna have to google that if you don't explain what CA means.

                          Color fringing = chromatic abberation

Sounds like your Icon has less of that than your Eterna.

I don't really like the sound of the barrel focus, but the glass sounds like it's definitely a little nicer.

Yeah, I'm Learning all kinds of things here. Just because it may have a slight edge doesn't mean the Eterna isn't of great quality as well. Splitting hairs at this point.

I think the Eterna will probably suit my needs just fine for glassing for mule deer across a canyon. I didn't notice much CA. I'm sure it probably shows a little, as most lenses do. But if it's not bad then it won't fatigue the eye.

I just need a good pan head, and I'll be in business.
