I run! I use the over head door company. $160 OTD 1 year warranty. I do a lot of crazy repairs and what not but, I'll pay to have that done any day.

If the tool you're using to tighten the spring lets loose, you'll notice it's close to your head and face and has the energy to smash you skull or jaw or teeth.
Definitely a job for somebody who does it for a living. They may replace just the spring, but my understanding is when one goes, the metal in the other is getting ready to snap shortly. They also check the rollers and bearings while it's apart.

Mine just broke a few months ago. Temporaried it with a cable clamp like OD does on our bay doors at work. Used a couple of round ratchet handles to put the tension back on it. I don't recommend it but I'm not real bright some times. Kept my teefus and pea brain as far away as I could while tightening it and NO, I will not replace the spring. After messing with it, I figure it's money in the bank to just have a pro do it right the first time.....and no DR. or dental bills.

I'm surprised at the responses on here. Pretty straight forward repair. Yes it's dangerous but just use common sense and you'll be fine.
2 - 18" pieces of steel rod and a tool kit and you're good to go. Ive helped my dad replace about 3 sets of springs and it's about a 1.5 hour job or less. Lots of how to videos out there to help.

I have a story about one of those springs. The Fire Station I worked at 6-7 years ago has those springs but bigger. The door was all glass so it was really big. We had 2 guys out working on the door. One guy up on a ladder was releasing the tension on the spring when the bracket that holds it to the wall came undone. The bracket spun around like a hatchet hitting the guys arm several times from his hand to his elbow. Deep cuts. While that was happening the spring got ahold of his shirt and drew him up against the wall off the ladder. His coworker came and got us in the station. Blood everywhere. After several minutes we got him down and by this time has landed a helicopter in back of station. BP was 80/palp. I saw a guy some time after working at another station with the same company. Asked about that guy and he said he died from complications a couple years later.
But its really an easy job
