    Looking for bulk railroad ties

Buying a new home and I'm going to have to install at least one, maybe 2 retaining walls, 4-5' tall by roughly 120'. I am wanting to use railroad ties, but need a place to buy bulk. The box stores would kill me on price I'm afraid. In McKinney now, but house is near Leonard. Willing to travel if price is right. Anyone got any leads? Also looking for some gravel for drainage behind the wall and field stone for a wood stove surround I am building. Thanks in advance.

McCoy lumber, have different grades very reasonable priced,i bought a 100 #2 grade for $4.00 a piece or try Craigs list, may even try calling RR in your area and ask who is buying from them

We found a rr crossing by luck while they were replacing old ties. 100$ and we could haul all we wanted. Took two full 35ft trailer loads. Guy said they were going to burn them anyway, a good portion were brand new! Probably hard to find something like this but keep your eyes out and dont be afraid to ask.

Find your local RR office and ask. Couldn't hurt.

Guys i know who work for UP tell me to watch and find where crews are loading old ties up where the track has been reworked. You can sometimes buy directly from them.

If you plan on staying there very long, you'd be better off going with a segmented retaining wall product like Keystone Compac or Versa-lok. More money up front, but they look better, last forever and will add value to your home if you ever sell. PM me if u want info on them.

                        Looking for bulk railroad ties

About 15 years ago I had 500+ on my property. The railroad left them there one day and I couldn't get them to pick them up. They said I asked for them but it was my neighbor that wanted them not me. I couldn't give them away. Ended up burning all but a handful of them.

                          You might want to reconsider.

Those thing are loaded with all kinds of bad stuff.

I agree with Stan. They attract fire ants.

We put them in at my in-laws place on a lake in east Texas. The sandy soil was difficult to hold back. When it rained, the sand shifted the ties and in the summer the ties leaked creosote that people tracked into the house. It is difficult to remove from carpet.
