My fiancee put the hammer down on this old South Texas buck last week.
I had seen this buck several times and decided that he would be a great management buck for her to take. We get back to the lease Dec 26 and though I knew we still had 10+ days of hunting left, I wanted to get her on her deer so I could start the search for mine.
He shows up the morning of Dec 29 but only for a short time. Before she can get ready to shoot, he is gone. Feeling sure that he would show back up that evening, we head back into camp. We head back out for the evening hunt and get settled in. We sit, wait and watch lots of deer but her deer never shows back up. Several other nice management bucks show up but she is already in love and wants only that deer! About 5:00 I get a couple of pictures from one of the other hunters, of her deer that is now almost miles away, at his stand! Luckily he knew she already had this deer on her radar and let him walk. (His wife was ready to shoot the buck until he realized what deer it was)
Feeling a little disappointed, we head in at dark scratching our heads and hoping that he will show back up in our area.
We head out early the next morning ready to take another chance on him and it turns out to be one of the slowest hunts that we have had. Only saw a couple of deer and unfortunately, he wasn't one of them, yet! At about 8:45, I look out one of the windows on her side of the stand and I see a single deer walking down the sendero! Could it be??? I throw my binoculars of to see who our visitor is and what do ya know! There he is at about 400 yards and heading our way.
She sees him and instantly goes from 0 to 100! Heart rate up! Heavy breathing! Nerves kicking in! Its go time! He continues marching straight to us until he gets to about 100 yards away where he stops to eat a little bit of corn, do a couple of circles and finally stops almost broadsided! Knowing that I didn't need to coach her along, I let her do her thing! She touches the trigger and I believe his belly hit the ground before his feet did!
He was 8.5 yo, weighed 193# and scored 127 7/8, with a 22" spread!
Another great job by her on a great South Texas buck!
