There is a little tab on the left side. Slide it to the unlock position

There should be a little slide on the side of it that is probably set to write protect mode. Slide it the other direction and try it again. See if that works for you.

I tried that, it still says the disk cannot be written to because it is write protected. Please remove the write protection from the volume in drive E.

It was in the unlock mode from the beginning if that helps, but I tried it locked also!

                  Work or personal computer?
Asking cause on our work computers IT has put a block on allowing users to write to external drives unless exception is in place.

Have not had it happen to an sd card, but have had it happen to a memory stick. I tried everything including going to the terminal (I use Linux, so DOS command line should be the same) and tried changing it to full read/write/execute. Computer said it made the change, Tried to write to the memory stick and it was still RO. I finally copied the memory stick to another drive, formatted the stick, and then copied everything back. It's been a year or so since the episode and everything is still fine. What happened??? Ain't got a clue.
