    The Last Thwack!

An unexpected change of plans gave me one last trip to my hill country lease this past week. After a great season and taking some awesome bucks ( fortunate to hunt a few different places) I had no expectations of anything other than to enjoy the ranch and maby take a doe to fill out the freezer.

New Years eve morning was a chiller and pretty wet too. In other words couldn't of been a better day to be in the woods. About 8 am I'm lovin life in the blind watching a medium doe feed at my feeder. I'm starting to talk myself into to flinging one at her when Mother Nature flipped that switch. I see heads bouncing up from the back headed towards me. Yep! Three nice does coming right in. At the same time I see antlers come out on the right. Whoa! Big ten headed to corn also. "Man I'm glad to see that deer so close to the end of buck season" ! I think to my self. Well hell yeah it's time to put my Strother to work.

Slowly and stealthly I bring my bow up to hot ready. As I peek down to hook on my Trufire I here commotion from the feeder. The ten had hit his rack on the feeder cage and every deer scattered! WTH, as start to scan the area half disappointed and half intrigued. It don't take but a fraction of a sec and he catches my eye. NO Way! Here he comes doing the tough guy trot right to my feeder. It's a deer I'd seen once several weeks ago on TC at night that I named " Blade ".

I had decided long before I hit the woods that morning that there was one buck that I knew of that I would go after if he showed himself and this was him. And what a buck to watch too! Well my slightly elevated heart beat was racing like a speed bag now! "Here you go, better make this one count" I tell myself. Well I had a new BH I was going to try on a doe but when blade showed I quicky switched arrows back to old faithful.

After three 73 lb let downs and what seemed like a half hour( maby 2 mins) I had that perfect shot. I did what I do and sent that grizz trick screamin. THWACK! NO BS that grizz hit him so hard it knocked him into a persimmon bush behind him. He quickly scrambled to his feet and hit the after burners. I watched him disappear into the icey mist.

Having learned from my past experiences I immediately recovered a blood soaked arrow and then returned to the blind for a half hour. Once I picked the blood trail up he wasn't but 60 yds plied up in a cedar. Turned out to be an awesome deer and I'm grateful to have been the one to harvest him. Some will say injury, others genetics, who knows? Been a heck of a season and couldn't have dreamed a better ending.

Thx for reading , be safe and good luck.

I'd rather have a unique buck than a perfect rack....much more rare! Congratulations...
