    Duck hunting in the afternoon?

Is it worth duck hunting in the afternoon? I am hunting stock tanks.

I've never had a real good afternoon. A few times we would get a limit but it was usually 2-4 ducks in an afternoon. This is in Arkansas in a spot we could limit in 30-45 minutes every morning.

Stock tanks for me were always better in the mornings unless I was going to jump shoot them the last day of season. Tanks you are hunting might be different but that's what I have found

Afternoon hunts can be good, but you are looking for where they are going to roost versus feed and drink....so an area great for a morning hunt can be lack luster for an afternoon hunt.

All of my duck hunting experience is in south Louisiana and mornings are pretty much always better than afternoons. But, if the ponds that your are considering hunting are where the birds want to be or are hanging out during the day, I'd give it a shot.

Ive hunted roosting spots in the afternoon and absolutely slaughtered them, some of the best hunts i had ever been on. Hunting non roosting spots, i have never had much luck.

We have a stock tank with woods around 80% of it and it is a good roosting spot. We have great shoots in the afternoons.

Yesterday there were ducks moving all day as that front pushed through. Afternoons can be good if the weather is right. I only hunt afternoons if there is a strong front hitting and the temps are dropping.

                    For hunting tanks:

                    Mornings are best

if hunting afternoons you have 2 options, since birds will already be there.

                    1. jump pond dam and kill what you can and go home- (not my thing, but to each their own)

                    2. Walk by tank and flush birds, then set up and shoot as they come back in. (I prefer option 2 and usually kill more birds)

Option 1 will take about 6 seconds........Option 2 will take 5-15 minutes then most shooting will be over

Option one can be a huge rush though, especially if you have multiple tanks over a large area to jump.

I've always thought of hunting the roost as a big no-no. Have done all my duck hunting at home in Arkansas though, and most clubs and public timber are closed to shooting after the morning hunt.
