Question for knife makers

Ive been seeing that alot of you use old saw blades , rasps , trap springs , ect
How do these materials perform as a working knife ? Edge taking. & holding , tolerance to normal field use. ? Thx

Most knifemakers are pretty busy right now. I'll be the one to say I wouldn't use old anything for a quality blade if that helps.

My suggestion would be to repost your question on the DIY section. No experience, but some tools are already hardened, so you'll either have a difficult time working it or soften it and re-temper.
