    Recoil/accuracy difference between a 45 colt and a 454 Casull??

I have an opportunity to get my hands on a Ruger Redhawk with a 8" barrel for almost nothing. It has the scope rings on it and its a safe queen.

I have a Taurus Judge that I really enjoy shooting. So what Im wondering is how much difference is the recoil on the 454 Casull compared to the 45 Colt? To me the recoil on the 45 Colt is back instead of up which makes it easier to shoot.

Im sure the accuracy is way better. Anyones self experience with this gun or caliber would be nice. I would like to have it as a hunting pistol.

    Thanks in advance.

The 454 will put you in the hurt locker!! After a few rounds. But it's a great round and you can still shoot 45lc thru it.

      The 454 is brutal.

I used to have one of the original Super redhawks in 454 casull with a 9.5 " barrell and I loved it. With factory loads, the difference in recoil is significant, but not unbearable. I handloaded for it and loaded up some pretty hot loads for it and it was pretty sharp. But I loved it and wish I had never sold it. I shot a big boar (250+lbs.) with a 325 grain solid lead bullet and he folded up like a lawn chair. I bought a pair of good shooting gloves and never really had a problem.

There is a substantial difference in recoil between the 45LC and 454 Casull.

I have a Super Redhawk 7.5" in 454 and 45 LC loads are very mild in it in comparison to the 454.

Love my .454, It has some recoil but I don't think it's that bad.

Any round that can deck a grown grizzly with 1 round, is deffinetly brutal.

It's SIGNIFICANTLY more profound than the .45 LC. I wouldn't want to shoot more than 10 rounds total from a .454 Casull.

Mike, I'm pretty sure this one is the same pistol you have. I guess I may just have to try it myself. I can always sell it if I don't like it. Something i'll have to sleep on. Its not going anywhere so I can take my time on this.

I got a Super Redhawk in .454 the first year they came out and I love this pistol.

Fire off a 300 gr bullet loaded up to a full load and then shoot a cowboy load in .45 and you'll swear some one loaded you up a squib load. Significant difference.

I can shoot about ten rounds of 240 gr bullets before they start to bother me but I can only handle about three rounds of 300 gr before I need to put on recoil gloves.

I've shot a few rounds of 454 and it kicked pretty good. Don't really remember if it recoils up or back. Seems it did both...
I'm wanting a wheel gun something fierce and looking at a Python right now but afraid it'll get too high before bids are done. If I get a 454 I'll have to look for a bow/pistol lease.

I've never shot a 454, but have shot and hunted with a 460 and to me it wasn't bad at all. Just an insane amount of noise and percussion. Of course the 460 smith is a HUGE handgun with lots of weight so it's not really a fair comparison with the smaller/lighter 454ruger. I'd bet the 454 ruger has more felt recoil than a smith 460 with equal barrel lengths. I say go for it!

A hot loaded 45 Colt is about the same as a 44mag. For Texas game, the 454 really only extends the range of the pistol and doesn't do anything the 45 Colt can't already do. The 460 is essentially a 45-70 in revolver form.

With a 300gr hardcast slug, there isn't much south of Alaska that a properly loaded 45 Colt won't fully penetrate. Break both front shoulders and eat right up to the hole.
