    Live bobcat trapping??

What is the best bait to put in a live trap other than a chicken? We went to the most worthless outdoor store yesterday and they had no bobcat lures. I can't find anyone local with a chicken and as cold as its gonna be I dont want to have to take fresh water daily for live bait.

Here is my thoughts and give me an opinion. We thought killing a cotton tail and hanging part of the skin and meat in the trap and also hanging part of the skin about 6 foot over the trap where it will blow in the wind as an attractant. Will this work without a lure?

The son-in-law of the rancher I used to hunt on used jackrabbit parts. Usually had two baits out of one rabbit. Cats are dumb and what you described should work. I saw his traps often. Didn't try to hide them, just set them near thick cover and caught cats. Doesn't work very well on yotes though, they're either too smart, too paranoid, or both ! Good luck !

A guy I know commercially traps Bobcats and the way he catches them is by urine scent from other Bobcats. He collects their urine from his cages and urine traps. He will use dead waterfowl inside the cages but urine is key

I wanted to add that to my set but gander mountain is pretty much worthless when you need something. They had coon, coyote, and muskrat but no bobcat.

I use jackrabbit or cottontail either one. And I have also hung a skinned bobcat leg in my cage trap and caught them on that.

I wire the leg to the back of the trap. Then I'll sprinkle a little cat urine in the front. I always use a flag usually a turkey feather hanging somewhere near the trap it can be over the top of it or 10-15 yards it's just to get them curious enough to walk over there.

Good luck it's a blast. Click image for larger version

Forgot to add that roadkill is your friend. That's where I get most of my rabbits lol. Can't tell you how embarrassed my wife gets when I come to a halt in the middle of the road to pick up a dead rabbit.

Don't necesarily need the bottled scent, if you can locate a wing from some of your last dove/duck hunts hang it in the back of your trap with light fishing line so it can move as much as possible. Set the trap as close as possible to a cats travel path. Be sure to brush in the sides of the trap to make a tunnel with your trap inside, if you can point the trap toward a light source like the moon or the light glow from town it will. Help to silhouette the wing dancing on a string. Cats are motivated visually almost as by scent, just think of a house cat chasing its kitty toy on a string.

Are there any legal issues with having a live bobcat caged on your property?

I don't know the law for sure!, but as long as you're not trying to sell live animals, I think you're ok, I know a lot of people that have kept them for hound training and urine collecting.

Thanks. I know a guy who has one.

Try a bird or a squirrel. I've caught 2 using a bird. Hang it in the back of the trap.
