They went straight to the source this year and ate nearly the whole years supply in a week.

Feed pens may slow them down, but don't stop them either!!

Wow, ok so I stand corrected. Ive had them push over feeders before but I've only seen them look at scattered corn like "why bother". I thought their mouth structure prevented them from doing it.

They cant pick it up because they don't have thumbs.

In rocky areas its hard for them to get the kernels, I know because I threw corn out yesterday and have 5 cows...they only tried to get it where its piled or concentrated....but they will tear up your feeder if u dont build a pen....

I've had them come through, sniff, lick at, but completely bypass handcorn that wasn't piled up. Thought for sure they'd hang around, but they just kept grazing on the grass and eventually moved out.

Aw come on, you're milking that joke!

Cows and horses are certainly capable of eating corn off the ground. I hunted a place (for one season only) that they would sleep under the feeder, and clean it all up before any other critter could get any. I got tired of feeding his cows, and he was opposed to feeder pens, didn't want his cows getting hurt by them tearing it up to get at the corn. Basically I fed his cows for a year.

Generally speaking I think you're right that a lot of cows won't take the time to pick up hand scattered corn if they have other stuff to eat. But I think there are some cows that just really like corn. Click image for larger version

Picture is from yesterday. I hand scattered corn and climbed into blind nearby to hunt. None of the corn was piled up at all. Within 200 yards of this is an oat patch where the cows spend a lot of their time grazing these days. So there is obviously plenty for the cows to eat, but this one still took the time to eat almost all of my hand thrown corn, which amounted to about one gallon in volume.

Yep we've had the same issue, also if the corn isn't coming out fast enough they're smart enough to knock the feeder over so make sure it's staked of to T-posts and/or fenced off so they can't get under it..

They get into our quail traps all the time, and that's cracked corn/milo.
