Cows and horses are certainly capable of eating corn off the ground. I hunted a place (for one season only) that they would sleep under the feeder, and clean it all up before any other critter could get any. I got tired of feeding his cows, and he was opposed to feeder pens, didn't want his cows getting hurt by them tearing it up to get at the corn. Basically I fed his cows for a year.

Generally speaking I think you're right that a lot of cows won't take the time to pick up hand scattered corn if they have other stuff to eat. But I think there are some cows that just really like corn.
Picture is from yesterday. I hand scattered corn and climbed into blind nearby to hunt. None of the corn was piled up at all. Within 200 yards of this is an oat patch where the cows spend a lot of their time grazing these days. So there is obviously plenty for the cows to eat, but this one still took the time to eat almost all of my hand thrown corn, which amounted to about one gallon in volume.Last edited by TopNoc; 12-17-2014, 04:05 PM.
