Question about lead shot while duck hunting

My buddy asked me a question and it got me to thinking.....

Friday will be both dove and duck season. We are planning to duck hunt in the morning and dove hunt in the afternoon. What's the law on having lead shot and dead waterfowl both in your possession?

Good one. I don't know, but I'd make dang sure I had some dead doves on me if I was also duck hunting.

Or only use steel shot for both just to avoid the potential headache?

Dove hunting with steel would get expensive quick!

I don't believe you can have lead shot in your possession while waterfowl hunting.

A quick call to tpwd or usfw would answer your question. I would imagine if the lead shot wasn't with you in the boat or blind while duck hunting, you would be good but that's just a guess.

I would buy the winchester fast steal during the early teal season and hunt both doves and teal over a tank at my last lease. 6 shot in Winchester fast steal in dove load will dump teal just as quick as 4 shot. Don't know about the bigger ducks though.

Does your vehicle count as possession?

That is what I'm worried about. I'll be driving in early that morning and plan on being in th field most of the day.

I was ticketed for too many ducks in 1990. The game warden also saw some low brass dove shot in the back of my truck and said he could give us a ticket for it.

                      That's what I would think.

I've found that to be the best way to stay out of trouble! Especially if its the local guy that patrols the area. I always give him a call if we are going spotlighting for hogs, predators or rabbits on our deer lease. Especially since he lives less than 200 yds from one of our gates!

I would not have a dead duck and lead shot anywhere close to each other. That combo could cost you a lot of money and headache. Even having empty lead shot shells is still trouble.

Last time I went goose hunting we were also going pheasant hunting that afternoon. Our outfitter warned us about making sure that we had no lead shot with us during the goose hunt. On the way home we kept the steel and lead shot separate in different ammo cans.

I have always just kept the lead in the truck while duck hunting. Swap out gear and ammo after the duck hunt and go bust some dove.
