    when to grunt call?

So yesterday morning I had a decent 8 pointer cruise through about 60 yards, he was walking slow just milling around but never presented a shot. I had a grunt call and decided what the heck and hit a few times just to see what reaction he would have. The first time he stopped and put his head up and kind of looked around, so I hit it again but it didn't really seem to phase him much, he just put his head back down and kept on going. I've never really tried that before so I wasn't even sure I was doing it right, rather than spook him I just stopped and let him go.

So to my question, when should you use a grunt? And what is the recommended call sequence to use on a buck?

I use a grunt prior to starting my rattling sequence.
I grunt loud and 'long' first. Then follow that up with 3-5 very short grunts.

I've witnessed a buck running in to a group of does and his grunt seem to come out every time his feet hit the ground while running.
I've also witnessed a buck jump into my feeder pen and he grunted so long and loud that he cleared the feeder pen. He would turn his head from side to side as if to tell everyone he was there.

    Hope that helps b
