I hunted axis for first time late, last may and cant wait to go again. when do they kick off the roaring?

You will here them roaring all year. Always some does in heat and bucks that are hard horned.

I've always thought it was June and July when it was prime.

We hear it all year round, heard it this past week as well in Camp Wood.

Late June- July - Early August is when we see the most rutting action

That is also the time when most of the axis are hard horned, but you will still see axis right now with hard horns or in different stages of growth. I saw a nice buck on Wednesday that had just dried his velvet and was ready to strip it

Agreed, but experience for me says early summer is the best time to hunt.
