    CHL Process

I posted this in the "Otherside of the Ranch" topic but wasnt getting any help.

I just want to double check to make sure I have everything required and the best way to complete everything.

As of this morning, I have submitted my application, signed up to take my FAST Fingerprinting (will be completed monday morning) and I have my CHL-100 form ready and complete.

From what I understand, all I will need to do is email or mail a copy of my CHL-100 and everything else is already done electronically....correct?

If im wrong, by all means please correct me and let me know what the best way to do so. I would figure email would be the fastest way but any personal experience?

I didn't see where you had taken a class?

I did. I believe you must complete a course before obtaining the completed CHL-100 form by your instructor.

There is a plethora of information on the web for everything you need. Here's a link, there are more like it:

My Opinion: if you are taking on the responsibility of carrying a weapon and possibly using it, you should take the responsibility of doing your research and know what is required/what the laws are.

lol okay, I know exactly what the laws are, as I am fully educated on those.... I'm merely asking as a point of clarification on what the best way to get my paper work in and turnaround time from personal experience but thanks for the input anyways.

There's just some things you can't post about these days on TBH without someone trying to give you a hard time instead of just answering a simple question.

You can go ahead and send your CHL-100 in now. Email is by far the best and most reliable way to do it.

You can send it in using this link: https://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/contact/chl.aspx

They will send you a confirmation within about 2 days saying that they have received it.

After you send in your CHL-100 and take your fingerprints you'll be done. You won't have to send in anything from your fingerprinting session, the FAST location will do all of that for you. They will, however, give you a receipt for your records.

My students have been reporting turnaround times of less than a month. My wife just got hers and she had it in less than 3 weeks!

When I got mine it was like 3-4 MONTHS! TX DPS has done an excellent job of expediting the turnaround times.

I have any and all links you might possibly need on my website as well.

If you have any questions or need anything, please feel free to email, text, or call! Congrats on getting your CHL!

Not going to bother to read all of the above.

                Here's the process I followed ...

                Signed up for the class.
Signed up for everything I could on line.
Did the "fast" finger print thing.
Went to class ... the instructor provided all the forms and materials requaired, including a large envelope to mail your stuff in.
Went to the range with the class, shot our quals, got the final form signed.
Put it all in the envelope previously provided and mailed same.
Waited 11 days and had my license.
                Piece of cake.
All instructors may not hold your hands quite so much, but that's pretty much the process. I highly recommend doing it in the order that I did. It wasn't that I was smart, just lucky.

One HUGE caveat .... When shooting your quals, use a full sized handgun, even if you have to borrow or rent one. I shot mine with a little S&W Bodyguard .380 and it was not a pleasant experience. I passed with no problem, but the timed fire combined with the recoil and long trigger pull on that little gun wasn't encouraging. It's just too small and too light for the job. I shoot a lot of handguns of various calibers and have put many thousands of rounds down range, but qualifying with that little .380 pocket gun was a new experience. Not something I'd ever recommend.

My process was a little more drawn out. I took my class in May, took my shooting qualifier the next day, then got real busy with life and have just not finally got around to applying...

I submitted my application Saturday morning online, pre registered for FAST Fingerprinting. I just completed my fingerprinting session and stopped by the office to scan my CHL-100 and my CHL Application Checklist as well just in case.

Now I play the waiting game! Lets see how quick I can get mine.

And that suggestion to shoot with a fullsize is probably one of the best tips during this process. I took my class with a friend and he shot a LCP and passed easily but he wasnt happy trying to hang on to that pea shooter. I ended up shooting with my Glock 33 that I am extremely comfortable with.

Now that this is all done, next up on my to do list is to take a dynamic handgun course and or night time combat class.
