I am not sure about that one bud. Most dogs were originally bred for security, hunting, or livestock. I have had them before and they are good dogs. I think their jaw/bite pressure is kinda weak do to the under bite nature of their jaw structure. The flatter snout can be prone to respiratory problems and they are prone to skin issues. Hunting may not be the best route to go. As far as a good smart dog for a companion and security at the house a very good breed. The ones I have had or have been around were great with people a couple have been rambunctious but that was the owners fault mainly. The best one I had was one of the best dogs I have ever had but kind of a wuss until I told her get after something. Watching her keep cows off feed in the back of the truck was hilarious but she did a good job of it.

I say raise that dog however you want. I had an old fat boy of an American Staffordshire Terrier that hadn't met anything wildlife related except the squirrels in the backyard, but when I moved out to the country he became the gamest dang tree hound you ever saw. He would tree coons, scent possums and feral cats, and tree them too. Over time he learned what kind of hiding spots those critters liked and he would run a pattern out in front of me like a lab flushing pheasants. Only problem was that he learned to climb trees and would go up one if he could. Ever tried to rescue 80 lbs of excited canine from 15 feet up a tree?
Your dog may not have the breeding to be a natural in the field but don't sell it short. Train him and see what happens.
